Categories structure the Products & Services catalog and flow into commissions, reporting, and client-facing catalogues.
Opening the Categories tab
Go to Products & Services (/app/catalog) and select Categories.
Requires products_services_categories permission at view or edit level.
Category types
Categories are typed:

| Product | Physical/rental catalog items |
| Service | Labor and fee items |
| Package | Bundled catalog entries |
| Discount | Discount line types |
Each type maintains its own hierarchy — parent categories and optional subcategories.
Hierarchy and sort order
- Parent/child relationships group related items (e.g. Furniture → Seating)
- Sort order controls picker ordering on estimates and catalog admin
- Renaming a category updates pickers; historical estimate lines keep their snapshot labels
Links to commissions and inventory
Commission rules often key off category IDs. When enabling commissions, align category trees with how sales reps are paid.
Product categories also help filter catalog lists when visible_in_catalogue items are exposed externally.
